In this article the authors discuss monitoring the diversity of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum for the elimination of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Topics include the rationale and mission of the Plasmodium Diversity Network Africa (PDNA), founded by African scientists during the 2012 Genomic Epidemiology of Malaria conference at Hinxton, England, the emergence of resistance to the malarial drug artemisinin in P. falciparum, and obstacles to eliminating malaria.
