The article discusses research on an opportunistic bacteria that may be able to prevent the spread of algal blooms that is likely to occur with global warming. These populations of proteobacteria, known as chemolithotrophs, live on organic matter. They were discovered by a team of researchers that included Marcel Kuypers of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology. Algal blooms facilitate environmental degradation by creating hypoxic conditions and producing hydrogen sulfide.
