This article presents the results of a study focusing on the effects of malaria on the health and education of school-age children. The effect of intermittent preventative treatment (IPT) on the improvement of children's classroom performance and attention is measured. The experimental group, a set of students in Western Kenya, received sulfadoxine-primethamine and amodiaquine at four month intervals. The classroom performance and health of the experimental group is compared to that of the control group, which received inert pills. The children who received the IPT treatment showed lower levels of anaemia and stronger cognitive abilities following their treatment.
