The impact of the network of journals through which scholars disseminate and accredit their ideas is compared to the prestige hierarchy of journals in sociology and political science. A comparison of prestige rankings of journals with Social Science Citation Index impact scores suggests a nonlinear relationship: many reputed "top" journals receive inordinate credit and many new and less prestigious journals receive less credit than their impact warrants.
