Timelessness, when it comes to matters of style, is a misguided virtue. You don't really want clothes that are timeless (and we all know that the years can get the better of any garment: that leather aviator jacket you swore you'd have forever? suddenly looks like Indiana Jones, the first go-round); you want to wear things that are relevant to, but not necessarily restricted by, the way you live now. It's that tough trick of being on trend without being trendy. In this issue, which is dedicated to the men's spring collections, we've tried to make that task a little easier. When we returned from the runway shows, my editors and I decided to forgo documenting all the new catwalk directions -- from tropical prints to wacky camouflage to perforated everything (yikes!) -- in favor of a more straightforward, dare I say classic, approach to warm-weather dressing. In the portfolios that follow there are summer suits -- superlight, slim shouldered, softly lined and easy to pack. There are beautiful shirts, discreetly patterned or richly hued, that impart a certain elegance, no jacket necessary. There are sporty separates -- sweatshirts, skinny chinos, windbreakers -- that, given their technical efficiency and aesthetic simplicity, have a kind of no-fuss grace about them. Not timeless, mind you: just smart for the here and now, and, possibly, for a few years to come. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
