The article examines the concept of the U.S. Patriot Act, with regard to the conduction of library surveillance. With the section 215 of the Act in hand, law enforcement agents are appealing to the patriotism of librarians in order to gather information on people the government suspects of having ties to terrorists or plotting an attack. According to the data collected by library sciences professor Leigh Estabrook, 85 of the libraries surveyed report that authorities requested information about their patrons pursuant to the events of September 11. In accordance with the passage of the Act, the American Library Association released a set of guidelines to inform librarians of what search warrants and subpoenas were and how they could react if in fact they were presented with such documents.
