The article discusses the history of the creation of the series "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War," in the "Century Magazine," under the supervision of editor Richard Watson Gilder in 1884, and its role in the national reconciliation in the U.S. The series featured essays from several officers about the events of war, which run for three years, from November 1884 to November 1887, making "Century Magazine" popular and Gilder as the most powerful arbiter of literary tastes in that period. The content of the series such as essays, poems and short stories put up a forum of views concerning the war through the northern and southern contributors. Union and Confederate strategists had contributed most of the essays which became the foundation of the civil war historiography.
