In some ways, the current approach to the management of knowledge in the age of the information superhighway is rather like running a horse and carriage along a six-lane highway. With the overload of information that many organizations face, it is important to cut down on the time spent searching for it. States that the template of the present modern one-stop-shop, the hypermarket, is supported by a whole logistics system of transport, information technology, and ordering that has grown up alongside it. Presents part one of an article which argues for the need to provide a truly integrated one-stop-shop for knowledge management (i.e., a system of information logistics) to support the information needs of business users. An information logistics system comprises all the components required for an integrated information environment, including systems which source information from groupware systems, file systems, databases, intranets, extranets, and the Web, all presented in a unified environment. As with a product logistics system, there needs to be transport systems (workflow and e-mail), warehouses (e.g., files and document stores), and presentation systems (browsers) to complete the solution.
