What counts as media, and when is it useful to look for it outside of the culture industries? Parks' ultimate contribution is that media "coverage" (and therefore media scholarship) is not reducible to standard conceptions of communications technologies and their content. Though the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) had launched satellites long before 9/11, there has been substantial expansion of the industry since, including the operations of Google Earth and the U.S. access to all commercial satellite images.
