This article reports on the discussions at the History Pavilion at the 2003 U.S. National Book Festival. Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Rick Atkinson explained why he is spending years writing a trilogy about the liberation of Europe during World War II. He said that it is the greatest story of the 20th century. He writes about war because war is a grate revealer of character. The extravagant stress of combat refracts character, allowing a person to see its basic components the way prism refracts light, he said. Book festival guest Juan Williams emphasized the importance of religion in the African American experience and discussed his book titled, This Far by Faith: Stories From the African American Religious Experience. James Bradley, author of Flyboys, described the fate of eight airmen on Chichi Jima, during World War II. He told the audience how, at the moment U.S. soldiers were raising the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima, eight airmen were in trouble on the closest neighboring island. Japanese soldiers had shot down nine flyboys, captured eight and eventually beheaded them. One got away; his name was George H. W. Bush. The U.S. government thought the fate of the eight men was so gruesome that the families could never be told. The details were kept secret. Even Bush never learned of their fate.
