World Book Day (WBD) has a proven track record in driving footfall into bookshops, offering the trade some great opportunities. During WBD week in 2003, book sales grew by 11.5% in volume (Nielsen BookScan GRM), with children's sales up 14%. Awareness of World Book Day runs at 87% among schoolchildren and 67% among parents, considerably greater. Six books are specially published, to be sold at £ 1, so that every child has the opportunity to redeem the voucher. Many parents top up the Book Tokens with hard cash for their children to spend on full-price "real" books.
