Summary: For about five years Sudan and its neighbor to the west, Chad, have engaged in a conflict in which proxies-rebel organizations seemingly pitted against the established governments of both countries-have conducted fighting at the behest of, and with support from, the governments in Khartoum and N'djamena. The military rulers of the two countries, once allies, have become bitter rivals. Much of the fighting has centered on the Darfur region of western Sudan, and adjacent areas of Chad. The conflict has also caused a humanitarian disaster for thousands of civilians driven out of their homes into refugee camps where there is inadequate food. The fighting is an example of how violence often depicted as uprisings against a central power can disguise inter-state rivalries that involve national militaries on both sides of the border.
