Born on the island of Lesbos in ancient Greece, the poet Sappho developed a reputation as one of the most gifted of all the lyricists in the ancient world. While today the phrase “lyric poetry” signifies verse writing that emphasizes emotions and the aural and rhythmic qualities of language, for Sappho, lyricism had a much more literal meaning. She wrote at a time of relatively scarce literacy, and her verses were composed to be sung aloud and accompanied by the lyre. As such, Sappho wrote songs that were easily memorized and richly beautiful but also intensely subtle, revealing their complex meanings as they were repeated over many performances.
