Reggae is a rock musical form with Jamaican origins that grew out of ska music. Many of the artists who popularized a style known as “roots reggae” during the 1960s were from the slums of Jamaica, and their lyrics reflected ghetto life and the concerns of the poor. Most of these same musicians were also members of a religious sect known as Rastafarianism, which holds that this world is the biblical Babylon. Babylon is represented in Jamaica by the government, which Rastas believe is not serving the people, but rather itself. Rasta philosophy, which emphasizes brotherhood and an end to all forms of oppression, is a frequent topic in reggae lyrics, which have a long tradition of political consciousness and opposition to the status quo. These elements have made reggae music and its artists targets of censorship by those who prefer the values of mainstream society, similar to other forms of protest music censorship.
