This article focuses on some aspects of the relationship between musical performances and sound recordings. After briefly introducing the topic of improvisation in music, I will try to integrate two of the most important theoretical contributions of Maurizio Ferraris’ philosophy - the redefinition of aesthetics as a "science of sensory perception" and the theory of documentality. The purpose is to shed light on some of the most discussed topics in the philosophy of music: the ontology of performance, recording on both physical and (apparently) intangible devices and, finally, the crucial role played by technology, particularly by the Internet, in making available simultaneously to millions of users an endless amount of music stored in memories with a virtually infinite capacity.
