The processes of scientific diffusion on one hand and institutionalization on the other refer to quite different logics. Institutionalization is rooted in a world of power relations. The acquisition and mobilization of material and symbolic resources is therefore necessary for the recognition and legitimization of a discipline not yet fully institutionally recognized that the notion of quasi-discipline permits to understand. On the other hand, the process of diffusion suffers the effects of multiple distorsions the correction of which requires the mapping out of the existing and possibly competing disciplines. The aim is to understand by what means, for the benefit (and against) of what actors occur both the construction and the circulation of epistemic objects in the field of communication studies. This paper analyzes the double process of epistemic and social institutionalization in communication studies in different national contexts through the concepts of science, studies and field.
