This volume is organized around an introductory text, which raises specific questions about the first stages of foreign language acquisition, and includes articles that take a position with respect to the introductory text. The objective of this closing text is to synthesize and comment on the authors’ reactions to the research problem discussed in this volume. The input encountered by beginner learners is central to the discussion about the first stages of acquisition in that a detailed study of input leads to a better understanding of the processes used by learners to break into the sound system and structure of a new target language. The goal is to find out how input characteristics (e.g., frequency and transparency, focus on forms taught in a classroom setting) contribute to the appropriation of a new language. Analysis of the input, however, only becomes coherent when it is juxtaposed to the manner in which learners process this input. In this closing text, we propose, therefore, a discussion of the interface between acquisition and pedagogy relative to these analyses. By extending this discussion, we encourage the use of “action-research”, the objective being to test predictions that stem from research conducted in “natural” teaching contexts, that is, where research happens in a communication-based foreign language classroom. ; Cet ouvrage est organisé sous la forme d’un texte d’ouverture qui soulève certaines questions concernant les premières étapes de l’acquisition d’une langue étrangère et de onze articles qui prennent position par rapport à ce texte.
