This paper argues that in the Japanese language, the sentence final form "NJANAI (KA)" has four different pragmatic interpretations : 1) the speaker intends to negate a particular proposition asserted by hearer which is contradictory to the speaker's initial presupposition; 2) the speaker admit or support a particular proposition newly asserted by the hearer, which contradicts the speaker's previous presupposition; 3) the speaker intend to show his/her negative attitude toward a particular proposition asserted by the hearer and 4) the speaker intends to imply that he/she is not confident enough of the validity of the statement which he/she has made.
