Walking through Lidice’s place of reverence, every visitor will feel the presence of history including and going beyond that night of 10 June 1942. That day, 173 men lost their lives, shot in revenge for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, and another almost thirty people were executed at the shooting range in Kobylisy on the outskirts of Prague. The Nazis deported the children and women to camps where they were murdered, or they died of exhaustion and disease. Only 143 women and 17 children managed to return. The history of Europe of the whole second half of the twentieth century is relected in the destroyed village. In times of war, Lidice was a symbol of the peace so coveted by free-thinking people. In times of peace, Lidice became a symbol for past and threatened wars. When Europe awoke from the nightmare of Nazism, this worldrenowned village once again became the centre of attention. The return of the village’s desperate women whose children and husbands had been murdered was extraordinary. So much raw pain tears the heart despite the time which has passed since that fateful night. Lidice’s women and their children have found a home in a new village. Not all the surviving citizens of Lidice gained the right to live together with the others in the village. Many even ‘disappeared’ from oficial lists of victims in order that their story of human tragedy could be erased. They were inconvenient to the new image formed for Lidice. And in contrast, some truly immoral acts remained unpunished, and remain hidden from the public still today. The Nazis were proud of their actions in Lidice. The Communists were proud of their new work in the new Lidice. The first were able to control its fate; the second its legacy. This book is based on a previously unexplored sources in the Czech and German archives that reveal the extent of crime and remembering him in many social levels.
