International audience ; This richly illustrated book places urban planning theories in the cultural, social, economic and political context of their emergence. It puts into perspective the different theories of urban planning to understand what unites or opposes them. The first three parts of the book show how the diversity of urban planning experiences that cities have had since the 16th century fall under three models:– the model of the regular city which organizes space based on principles and rules of a geometric nature (simple forms, walls intersecting at right angles, symmetry of the building plan, regularity of the openings, continuity of the facades, relationship between the height of the frame and lane width).– the model of the organic city, which arises from a critique of Haussmannian experience and relies on geography and history to build an urban planning action that takes into account spatial and social diversities.– the model of the modern city which seeks to adapt urban structures to technical and economic progress which is embodied in the car and the residential building. The last part shows how these models must be revisited to meet the contemporary challenges of sustainability, resilience and ecological transition. This book is a tool at the service of students, researchers and professionals by showing how urban planning theories and operational projects interact to think about the transformations of the city and act on their future.TABLE OF CONTENTSPart 1.
