Refleksija o vlasti upravlja političkim mišljenjem Claudea Leforta. Kako je za svako društvo konstitutivna podjela, vlast je potrebna kako bi se društvu otvorio put stvarnosti i dao identitet. Time svaka vlast ima simboličku efikasnost. Prema Claudeu Lefortu demokracija je jedini režim koji razmak između simboličkoga i zbiljskoga označuje praznim mjestom: pojmom vlasti koje se nitko ne može domoći te koje društvo navodi na iskušavanje vlastitog ustanovljenja. U trenutcima krize kada se društvo pokaže nemoćno uobličiti oko svoje temeljne podjele, javlja se iskušenje da se simbolički prazno mjesto vlasti stane promatrati kao zbiljski prazno. Tada može nastupiti totalitarni projekt koji teži zauzeti prazno mjesto vlasti i napuniti ga slikom Jednog-naroda, slikom društva bez podjela. Ovim se radom, počevši s novim poimanjem političkog, kako je izneseno u Lefortovoj analizi Machiavellijeva djela, želi pokazati na koji se način simbolički uobličavaju režimi modernosti – demokracija i totalitarizam. ; Reflection on power (imperio) governs the political thought of Claude Lefort. Since society cannot relate to itself immediately, it uses power as a means of giving itself identity and an access to the real. Power, or the image of power, is thus symbolically efficacious. According to Lefort, democracy is the only regime that marks the distance between the symbolic and the real with an empty space – an image of power which implies that power cannot be taken. This in itself forces the democratic society to question its own establishing. In the time of crisis if a society shows itself to be unable to form a mise en forme in regards to the void which constitutes society, a temptation to perceive the symbolically empty place as really empty appears. This is a point when a totalitarian project may emerge, a project aiming to fill the empty place of power with an image of a Peuple-Un, an image of a society without division.
