International audience ; European classical music has spread around the world, but the process differs from country to country, depending on historical contexts. In Vietnam, this music arrived with the French at the end of the 19th century. The first Vietnamese-written songs on European staves appeared in the press in 1938, giving birth to the New Music (Tân Nhạc). From this time until 1954, when the Indochina War ended, Vietnamese musicians composed several hundred songs in various historical contexts.In the early 1950s, in the North, the Vietnamese Government decided to build the future Vietnamese Music on a professional basis according to the European classical model, while having taken root and inspiration in the vernacular tradition, giving birth to a “Modern – Traditional” music; A music adapted to Vietnamese soul and open to the world. This was a decisive and important turning point of Vietnamese music towards an universal academic musical language.Thus, taking advantage of international agreements, from 1954 onwards musicians went to several music conservatories abroad to learn the basics of European academic music. In 1956, the Ministry of Culture opened the Vietnam School of Music in Hanoi (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music); moreover, the first Symphony Orchestra of Vietnam was established in 1959.In the ensuing decades, with a Vietnamese musical esthetic, using the techniques of academic music (e.g., harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, and vocal works), Vietnamese composers and musicians have created thousands of works. Traditional tunes sound different with the technical means of the European academic tradition and, conversely, the oriental soul of the above-mentioned composers magnifies the European techniques.
