; The purpose of this thesis is to describe the pregnant mother’s substance use during pregnancy, and how it affects her own health and social-psychological wellbeing, and the fetus and the long- term effects it may have on the child’s development. We also investigated what kind of support is available for substance use disorders families, and how they can apply for it. We started the work by making a questionnaire for pregnant women and recent mothers who have substance use disorder. In the questionnaire we asked about what info they need / would have needed during the pregnancy, and about the support they have received or would have needed. We got answers from 11 pregnant or recent mothers. Mostly they wanted to know how the substance use affects the fetus, and where they can apply for support during the pregnancy or after the child birth. Based on the results of the questionnaire we built this thesis so, that in the first part we concentrate on the substance disorder mothers and how the addiction affects their health, and wellbeing. Second part describes how the substances affect on the fetus, and also describes the long-term effects on the child’s health and future development. The child might have for example learning difficulties, and attention deficit disorder, unbalances emotional status and feeling of insecurity. Alcohol use has more effects than drugs for the fetus, but all the substance use increases the risk of unhealthy lifestyle, other illnesses, violence and socio-economy challenges. There are many organisations that offer support for substance use women and mothers, but one of biggest challenges is the woman’s motivation to commit to the treatment. In Finland the fetus is not considered as a juridical person, and so mother can not be imposed to compulsory treatment or rehabilitation. That is why the treatment and substance rehabilitation programmes are based on the woman’s voluntariness and motivation. It is important that the support systems are easy access, and they recognise the need to support the woman’s motivation, and where the women can feel themselves safe and accepted. Based on this report we made a guide for substance use families. The guide describes the effects of the substance use to the fetus and child and his/her development. It also introduces support organisations from where the substance use families can apply for help.
