This document initially presents the results of a literature review regarding the Lean methodology, such as its origin, its principles, its application to product development and mainly its differences with respect to the traditional management of projects for the product development process. This review was done in order to have enough theoretical basis to start the process of developing a simplified model that illustrates the differences between the traditional approach and the Lean approach and to compare their performance in a simulation of a phase of the product development process using a simulation platform recognized at an academic and industrial level called SIMIO. The review stage of the literature relevant to product development and the initial stage of the development of the model were executed in the RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) under the supervision of Professor Marcos Esterman. The final stages of the project, such as modifications to the model and the analysis of the results, were done at the UAO (Universidad Autónoma de Occidente) with the help of Professor Álvaro Rojas. Based on the results obtained from the final model, it is concluded that the model captures the desired dynamics and illustrates the expected behavior of the two methodologies in the product development process, in which the Lean approach is the most effective in the execution of tasks.
