Head ornaments of this type are rare. Captain James Cook was the first European to comment on them, on his second voyage in 1774. He described them as the Marquesans' "principal head-dress, and what appears to be their chief ornament" (Cook 1777, 1:309-310). They are thought to have been worn by male chiefs, warriors, or dancers during special performances. Since these ornaments are extremely fragile, it is surprising that any examples have survived.
