Successful diabetes management requires functional collaboration between health care professionals and diabetic patients, which is accomplished through the process of interaction. However, the relationships between diabetes management, collaboration, and professional–patient interaction and the significance of professional–patient interaction for the collaboration process have not been studied extensively in the context of type 2 diabetes care. This communication science study aimed to describe the experiences of type 2 diabetic patients to show how professional–patient interaction facilitates and impedes diabetes management–related collaboration. Patients’ (N = 41) perspectives were studied qualitatively by examining their experiences (N=63) with doctors and nurses that they found to facilitate or impede diabetes management. Data were collected using an open survey and semi-structured interviews during the years 2014 and 2015. The research data were combined at the analysis phase and were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The critical incident technique was applied in conducting the study. Professional–patient interaction both facilitated and impeded diabetes management–related collaboration, especially in three sub-areas: the sharing of information, showing and receiving social support, and defining the collaboration-related roles. Through these sub-areas, professional–patient interaction was related both to the planning of diabetes management and its implementation. A central element to the facilitating and impeding significance of professional-patient interaction was found to be whether professionals and diabetic patients managed to build a common interaction style. The results of this study can be utilized to update the quality criteria for diabetes care and, therefore, to evaluate and develop diabetes management–related collaboration. ; publishedVersion ; Peer reviewed
