There is a significant scholarly debate over areas of cooperation between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) in reference to the 2022 Russo-Ukrainian War. The Russian reinvasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 created the largest security crisis in Europe since the end of the Cold War, and potentially since the end of World War II. It is in this context that the debate of the role of cooperation between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) was recast. It is a multifaceted debate, with multiple lines of effort between the two organizations that create both cooperation on multiple issues and tension in other areas. While many of the elements of the debate have been long standing, the Russian aggression brought NATO-EU defense relations back into focus.
