Les cycles des variétés locales de sorgho, à cause de leur caractère fortement photopériodique, s'allongent lorsque le semis est précoce. Le photopériodisme modifie fortement la longueur de la période semis-floraison ainsi que le nombre et la surface des feuilles. Un zonage portant sur la synchronisation de la floraison avec la fin de la saison des pluies est effectué en fonction de la latitude appropriée au photopériodisme variétal. La flexibilité de la date de semis est discutée dans le but de limiter les excès d'eau si la floraison est trop précoce ou le stress hydrique si elle est trop tardive
