Folder 1 contains the Questionnaire of the Austrian Heritage Collection at the Leo Baeck Institute and additional biographical documents. Vital documents include birth certificates, residency permits, military documents, and other related documents stemming from the war years in Cernauti / Czernowitz. There are also documents relating to his attempts to emigrate from Romania, an honorary diploma, correspondence relating to emigration and exhibitions, his parents' death certificates and other post-World War II Romanian and American identification documents. ; Folder 2 contains a number of high quality color xeroxes of family members and friends from before and during World War II. A description of the individuals in the photos can be found in the inventory in folder 1. Of interest is a photograph of Arno in Czernowitz, wearing the Jewish star half-concealed (1941). Xeroxes of many anti-fascist illustrations that he made during the 1940s are also included (in Romanian), as are some color photos of other artwork, completed after emigrating to the United States, as well as Christmas/Hanukkah cards, which he illustrated. ; Folders 3 and 4 contain clippings of articles by or about Arno, as well as 3 friends of his, Alfred Gong, Norbert Gingold, and Viktor Boiko. Of interest is the original photograph, "Die alten Juden", donated by Boiko and Arno depicting a bench of Jewish men sitting on the Weinberg overlooking the city of Czernowitz (1933). ; digitized ; One original cartoon by Ed Arno published in "The New Yorker" (April 18, 1977) has been removed to Art Collection. ; See also Ed Arno's book in the LBI library "Most Wanted". ; See also interview with Ed Arno (AHC 677) ; Ed Arno was born in Innsbruck in 1916 as Arnold Edelstein. His family returned to Czernowitz, the birthplace of both his parents, shortly after his birth. He grew up in Cernauti / Czernowitz (under Romanian rule after 1918), moving to Paris to study art from 1936-1939. He returned to Czernowitz shortly before the Soviets invaded and occupied the city from 1940-1941. After the return of the Romanians he was initially issued an exemption from deportation by the mayor Popovici (his stamp is on one document in collection), but eventually was deported with his parents to the Mogilev concentration camp in Transnistria. They survived and upon returning made their way to Bucharest. There he married Rita and worked as a caricaturist, political cartoonist, and illustrator of childrens' books until his emigration in 1964 to Rome and then the United States in 1965. Since 1969, he worked as a cartoonist for the New Yorker as well as numerous other publications.
