This is a masters thesis/project ; The influence of micro lending on women empowerment remains a subject under discussion all over the world. Some studies affirm that microcredit doesn’t influence significantly women empowerment while others took micro credit as a key factor of women empowerment. In context of Rwanda, after darkness time of genocide in 1994 which left the economy unstable, the government has made significant step in stabilizing and rehabilitating its economy among which a number of micro finance institutions were established aiming at alleviating poverty by providing micro credits, savings and training programs that allow small micro entrepreneurs and starters to take advantage of economic opportunities. In these programs, women were to be empowered socially and economically as some of them became responsible of the families left by the genocide of 1994. This situation has driven the researcher to undertake the study on “the influence of micro lending on women empowerment” with special reference to women groups financed by UOB operating in Kimironko Market. The objectives were to find out the influence of micro credit, savings and training on women empowerment and to analyze special micro credit facilities available to women. This study benefited the researcher, the microfinance institutions, the government of Rwanda, and other researchers. The target population of this research was 400 women operating in Kimironko market. From this population a sample of 200 women was randomly selected. This research is descriptive in nature and it used both primary data and secondary data. Primary data were collected views of selected women through questionnaires and interviews while secondary data were collected from books of records of UOB, records of committee members of the group. Both the reliability and validity of data were ensured. The analysis of data was processed using descriptive statistics with the help of SPSS 17. It was found that micro loans have a positive impact on women empowerment because they have brought positive changes on the level of income, house hold assets, home equipments, business decision making and self confidence of running the business. Both micro credit training and micro saving have positive impact on women empowerment. It was recommended to micro finance institutions that repayment period be changed from one week to one month like other formal commercial banks and to increase the loan size basing on business size and client credit worthiness. Other flexible means of securing the loan individually instead of a group would be put in place. ; Research Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment for the Award of a Degree in Master of Business Administration (Accounting and Finance Option) of Mount Kenya University
