The bicentennial of the War of Independence was commemorated with spendor in Spain, and resulted innumerous publications. The event witnessed a major historiographic revision of this historic moment. The « official » version of a national popular uprising in a united country that managed to triumph over foreign occupants was seriously questioned by numerous works concerning the construction of the memory of this event. The War was reexamined in all its complexity, a war against a foreign occupant, but at the same time, a revolution and a civil war; it was long analyzed as a powerful myth used in the construction of a Spanish nation during the entire nineteenth century and until Franco. Thus the war of independence was now perceived as a expansion of the political sphere, and a laboratory of nineteenth century political experience in Spain. Moreover, the interpretation of this conflict became a subject of investigation across Europe, even in America, inviting many illuminating exchanges of scholarly interpretation. The war of independence emerged from this historiographic reevaluation as representing a profound rupture in the history of Spain. ; Le bicentenaire de la guerre d’Indépendance a été commémoré avec faste en Espagne et a donné lieu à de très nombreuses publications. L’événement a suscité et accompagné une rénovation historiographique majeure de la lecture de ce moment historique. La version « officielle » d’un soulèvement populaire national, dans lequel une nation unie mais dotée de faibles moyens était parvenue à vaincre l’occupant étranger a été mise à mal, à travers de nombreux travaux sur la construction de la mémoire de l’événement. La guerre est désormais replacée dans toute sa complexité, guerre contre un occupant étranger, mais aussi révolution et guerre civile, et a été longuement analysée comme un mythe puissant utilisé dans la construction de la nation espagnole durant tout le xixe siècle et jusqu’au franquisme.
