On March 23, 2003 the 325th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division moved north from our staging area in the shadow of Kuwait International Airport into Iraq to secure Main Supply Route 8 along the Euphrates River from the town of Samawa to Ramadi to allow sustained combat operations in Iraq. As the Direct Support Military Intelligence Company assigned to the 325th, our job was to provide targeted intelligence collection and reporting to the commander to meet his specified requirements. We positioned three and four Soldier teams with each subordinate battalion to collect and provide information using interrogation, radars, movement sensors, and radio communication intercept. We also provided an analysis and tracking cell within the Brigade Tactical Operations Center (TOC). Throughout the deployment, we remained organized in this manner. Often, inexperienced Sergeants and Corporals led our teams with limited guidance from company leaders because of our wide displacement. These remarkable young men and women, through their grit and resolve, were directly responsible for every measure of success that we achieved.
