The purpose of the study was to describe the health-related quality of life and related factors at the beginning of low vision rehabilitation, and at six months, one year, and two years following low vision rehabilitation. Participants were visually impaired older adults living at home. The purpose was to also describe the individual vision rehabilitation process, visually impaired older adults’ experiences of low vision rehabilitation, and the difficulties faced in everyday life due to low vision. The study was conducted as a mixed-method follow-up study. The participating home-dwelling adults aged 65 or older (n = 79) came to the Low Vision Center at Oulu University Hospital by referral over the course of one year (5/2016–5/2017). At the end of the follow-up, the majority (n = 28) of those selected for the study at baseline (n = 39) were reached. Quantitative research data were collected by interview administration with the 15D health-related quality of life instrument and the well-being supportive environment instrument. Qualitative research data was collected through semi-structured thematic interviews, the questions of which concerned experiences of and expectations for low vision rehabilitation. Vision-related difficulties faced in everyday life and data on the low vision rehabilitation process were collected from patient records. The data were analyzed by statistical methods as well as by inductive and deductive content analysis. The severity of visual impairment, age, and gender had no statistically significant association with health-related quality of life among study participants, but visual impairment impaired participants’ health-related quality of life compared to the general population. The health-related quality of life of the participants decreased clinically relevantly during the follow-up period but stayed at a reasonable level.
