Kuldip Singh Bains came to Canada in 1936 at the age of 18 years. His uncle came to Canada in 1906, then his father came in 1922. People came to Canada because it had better economic conditions. He came alone from his village. At that time wives and unmarried children under the age of 18 were allowed to come. He came via Hong Kong. At Hong Kong he stayed for 2 months at the Gurdwara [temple]. He took the Empress of Canada ship to Victoria. He traveled 3rd class where they had open bunks. He was the only person from India on board. Other passengers were Chinese and Japanese who got off at Honolulu and Japan, so he was alone in the ship for a lot of the journey and remembers weeping on the ship. He landed in Victoria where his father was living. In 1926 many families of the community came to Canada and bought property. Houses were available for $400. His father worked in Duncan and bought 80 acres of land for $500. He worked in a mill for 18¢ an hour and attended night school. He had never been to school full time. Other children such as Dr. Sadhu Singh Dhami, Ranjit Singh Mattu and Karan Singh went to school and university in Canada. When he came many Indian people had horse carts which they used to sell fuel wood. There were not many people in the community and they lived in bunk houses with a cook. In cities people lived in groups in houses. The Depression was still going on and there was no work. People walked miles to find work. At that hard time no person from the community took welfare relief. Some people opted to send their families back in India, but in 1930s there were about 1500 Indian people in BC. There was a Gurdwara Committee and Nagendra Singh Gill was the President of the Gurdwara. In 1939 Pandia took active part in the legalisation of 300 people [who had come to Canada illegally]. With community cooperation from the various Gurdwaras the issue was solved. The main Gurdwara was in Vancouver and the registration of members in the Gurdwara society was through the Gurdwara Diwan Khalsa Society. Akali Singh Gurdwara was made in 1953. There were two groups in the Gurdwara: Surain Singh’s group and Gurdit Singh’s group. Many associations were formed at that time such as the young men’s association, the Hindustani league, the Babbar movement for the freedom of India. In the 1930s revolutionary activities increased. In the Gurdwara Kuldip Singh supported the Indian leader Subhas Chandar Bose and with that he came in contact with Darshan Singh Sangha. Darshan Singh Sangha came to Canada for his studies but was involved in political activities at the university. Kuldip Singh and Darshan Singh Sangha lived together in a house, and he supported Darshan Singh financially. Darshan Singh became member of communist party and both were activists in the IWA [International Woodworkers of America]. In 1946 he was working in Victoria getting 32¢ an hour cash. Wages were increased to 40¢ but his wages were not increased as he was active in union activities. During that time Darshan Singh came from Vancouver Mayo mill to Victoria. When Hitler attacked Russia, the communist party changed its stand and made the slogan liberal labour relation. Party became legal at that time. Darshan Singh was the recording Secretary of the IWA. The IWA started in Vancouver. Its head office was in America. Membership for the party was one and half dollars. During the war time labour was in more demand. The first strike was held in 1946 across BC. Workers used to work 56 hours a week. At that time IWA demanded 25¢ an hour wages, a 40-hour work week, and a union shop. In 1945 they accepted 44 hours per week. The union planned to teach the workers about their rights. It took many years for the union to become strong. He worked from 1938 to 1945 in the mills. Before union there was no chance for progress in the mills; Indian people were not allowed to work on machines. There was discrimination against Indian people. In Duncan only one barber shop run by Japanese people wouldn’t cut Indian people’s hair. They were not allowed in the swimming pool in Victoria. In beer parlours and restaurants Indian people were not allowed to go. Indian people had to fight for their rights in Canada. During and after the war there was more understanding between them and white people. In 1951 he started his business and got married in 1953 in Canada. He went back to India to the first time in 1961 for a month.
