David begins the interview talking about how he became interested in writing about Oumu Shinrikyo and his personal experience of the the cult’s nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway system. For the majority of the interview, David discusses what he describes as the “Star Trek meets the X-Files” nature of the cult from the high-tech labs built to develop weapons of mass destruction to the political and cultural contexts in Japan that helped foster the rise of the cult and the authorities inability to recognize and counter the threat of the Oumu organization. David ends the interview talking about other similar organizations, the lack of understanding about their operations, and how indifferent such organizations are to killing others in pursuit of their goals.
