His mother when his lips she pressed, And bade her noble boy adieu, With wringing hand and aching breast, Beheld a march for Waterloo. He told her of his hopes and fears, His knapsack o'er his shoulder threw, And cried, "Dear Mother dry those tears, Till I return from Waterloo." As he went under the setting sun, Beheld the army the foes subdued, The flash of death the murderers gun, That laid him low at Waterloo. Oh comrades comrades," Edward cried, And brightly beamed his eyes of blue, "Go tell my mother Edward died, A soldiers death at Waterloo." We laid his head upon his drum, Beneath the moonlight mournful hue, The night was still the battles hummed, We dug his grave at Waterloo. We fire three rounds above his grave, In honor of the noble brave, The echo reached from shore to shore, Farewell farewell forever more. ; Funding for digitization provided by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Happy Hollow Foundation.
