Electroactive Alcohol-Tolerant Pt-Alloys

The electro catalytic activity of PtCr/C and PtCo/C catalysts for the ORR in an ethanol-containing medium was studied. It was found that these materials present a high tolerance to the alcohol in an acid solution as well as in a Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell (DEFC) configuration. Particularly the PtCo/C catalyst showed very important electrocatalytic characteristics, i.e., a small increase in onset potential of the ORR in the presence of ethanol, a very small variation in current density at 400 mV vs. DHE and a very important performance as cathode material in a DEFC. The current densities from the DEFC equipped with a 10% PtCo/C cathode were similar to those obtained when a 20% PtCr/C cathode was used. However, an improved performance in terms of mass specific current density was shown by the PtCo-based cathode in the DEFC. These results indicate the advantage of using PtCo-alloys as oxygen electrodes in DEFCs.
