A biography of military surgeon Bernard Vanderfieft is presented. He was born in Utrecht, Netherlands, on October 9, 1829, and attended the Utrecht Training School for Military Medicine. He was appointed a medical officer in the Royal Dutch Navy in 1850 and resigned in 1856, and he studied medicine and surgery at the University of Louvain. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1861 and volunteered for the New York Infantry in the U.S. Civil War and was appointed surgeon of the 102d New York Infantry Regiment in 1862. He managed the General Hospital of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland. He died on September 8, 1866.
