Drawing on Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital and Lamont's theory of symbolic boundaries, the authors examine taste clusters of musical preferences and substance use among adolescents and young adults. Three analytical levels are analyzed: fixed effects analyses of aggregate patterns of listenership and substance use, logistic regressions of genre preferences and drug use from a nationally representative survey of individuals, and arrest data from a large concert venue hosting varied musical performances. A consistent picture emerges from all three levels: rock music is most closely associated with higher use of a variety of substances, with variability across the subgenres within that broad category. In addition, hip hop also shows patterns of high association with substance use, while pop and religious music are associated with lower use. These results are robust to fixed effects models that account for changes over time in radio markets, a large battery of controls in the individual-level survey, and inspection of concert data establishing the co-occurrence of substance use and music listening in the same place and time. Taken together, the results show how symbolic boundaries are simultaneously drawn around music and drugs, such that consumption of particular musical forms signals participation in broader subcultures.
