The article discusses the schools founded during the Wars of Religion in France to educate Huguenot noblemen, beginning in the year 1560, which also made overtures to members of other religious groups. This Calvinist educational system was designed to produce students able to defend themselves and counter the arguments of Catholic theologians. Topics mentioned include the curriculum, which covered a broad range of languages such as German, Italian, and Ancient Greek; the writings of school administrators including the writer Pierre d'Origny, the nobleman Pierre de La Primaudauye, and the captain François de La Noue on the civil wars raging at the time; and the question of whether their efforts for a more ecumenical approach bore fruit.
