The article discusses the use of Slavic-language chronicles and other manuscripts dating to the 14th through 18th centuries as sources on the history of the medieval Kievan Rus. It distinguishes three groups of chronicles: those including variants of "Povest' vremennych let" (Tale of Years Past, PVL), which is considered the earliest work of East Slavic historiography, those compiled under the Grand Dukes of Muscovy in the 14th through 17th centuries, and versions of "Novgorodskaja I letopis'" (First Novgorod Chronicle). The chronicles are then described according to philological principles. Their value to the historiography on Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages is also assessed.
