Municipal solid waste disposal is an enormous concern in developing countries across the world. Municipal solid wastes can now be used due to their double advantage of providing energy and keeping the environment clean. The paper treats municipal solid waste incineration in the semiarid regions of Nigeria and Niger Republic. Proximate and ultimate analyses in the area of study showed refuse characteristics as: Moisture: Volatile matter: Fixed carbon: Ash content, as 32.593: 25.256: 10.00: 32.150 for Kano in Nigeria and 17.539: 25.950: 19.111: 37.40 for Zinder in Niger republic. The lower calorific values (LCV) of the refuse in the area of study were found to be 5.66 MJ/kg in Kano, 5.08 MJ/kg in Maiduguri and 5.86 MJ/kg in Niamey and 5.02 MJ/kg in Zinder. Supplementary fuel in the form of bagasse was added. A municipal solid waste incinerator of the parallel flow type was designed with a total volume of incinerator chamber: 82.5 m3, length of bed: 11m; width: 3m and height: 2.5 m, while the adiabatic flame temperature was found to be 1,587 K. A three dimensional drying model of the numerical bed type was developed, ran and validated using the physical model generated data. Physical and mathematical model simulated results gave a very good level of agreement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
