The article discusses the history of settlement of Australia, war waged against its aboriginal people in doing so, and biases in reporting and remembering the true history. It notes the so-called great Australian silence, terminology used by Australian anthropologist W.E.H. Stanner to characterize these historical oversights or concealed truths. It notes the doctrine of thought that became accepted in the 1830s that war could not be waged against aboriginal people who were considered to be British subjects.
