The article presents a study that investigates the age of antibody decay in calves which influenced the duration of passive immunity through the use of survival analysis techniques. It aims to know the proper timing of vaccination against Akabane virus (AKAV). The study, which was conducted in Japan, used an accelerated failure time model that indicated varying maternal antibodies of beef calves in different regions in Japan. It concludes that in order to prevent epizootic encephalomyelitis, the differences in the maternal immunity to AKAV for different types of cattle in different regions should be considered when a vaccination strategy will be adopted.
