Regarding Narva's post-war history, the question has often been posed as to whether the Soviet occupation authorities hindered the people of Narva, who had been evacuated by the German occupation authorities in 1944, in returning to their home town. No documents have been found to confirm that there was a ban on former Narva residents returning. But post-war Narva was certainly not an attractive place to live since the city was completely destroyed in 1944. The main hindrance for those who wished to return was the lack of a place to live. The letter in this article, from summer 1953, was sent by former Narva resident Aino Hansen to the First Secretary of the Estonian Communist Party Central Committee, Johannes Käbin. It describes inhuman living conditions in a mud hut that is approximately ten square metres in size, where three generations of a family were forced to live: a new-born baby, its mother, and grandmother, who had worked for years in the Kreenholm factory but whose application for an apartment had not been satisfied by the town authorities.
