In the 1990s Augusto Roa Bastos wrote his last narrative cycle focusing on characters and events from the Paraguayan war, representing a break in style from his previous writings, in which this bellicose conflict was always alluded to in a secondary manner in novels and short stories. We take from his last cycle two works ("Frente al frente argentino" y "Frente al frente paraguayo") belonging to a collective work entitled Los conjurados del quilombo del Gran Chaco (2001) in order to analyze the modalities in which Roa, without altering to much the principles of his poetics, participates with his fiction in a field of interpretations on the Paraguayan war, displacing the centre of interest to the borders and to an analysis of Solano López as a contradictory figure. To revisit this conflict from the 19th century at the beginning of the 21st century implies that we read the discourses that consolidated national identities from the viewpoint of current regional configurations.
