With the advent of the War in Iraq, myriad commentators in the popular press posited that anti-war music in the mainstream had decreased since the Vietnam era. They offered different reasons for this decline, namely changes in the media and socio-political landscapes. They also speculated that such a decline negatively impacts anti-war mobilization efforts, given that there is little popular anti-war music to persuade individuals to oppose the war or galvanize the resistance of those who are already against it. Given that there is little scholarly work that documents protest music and its impact over time, and even fewer studies that examine anti-war music, this paper represents the early stages of research that seeks to fill these gaps in the literature. The paper explores empirical works relating to two research questions: 1) How has popular anti-war music changed from 1963 to 2007 and why? And 2) What is the impact of anti-war music on anti-war movement mobilization? The paper concludes with highlighting the preliminary issues raised in the literature review that should be included in developing future study design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
