The juxtaposition of Indigenous and Western knowledge occurs within a context characterized by colonization and, more recently, by a political will to overcome this historical context. In terms of research in the social sciences, the juxtaposition of these two knowledges emerges as a will to legitimize Indigenous knowledge conceptualized along three distinct directions: science, praxis, and narrative. An analysis of these three perspectives attempts to reveal the issues and challenges posed by social work research in an Indigenous context. The first direction is primarily concerned with demonstrating that Indigenous knowledge is equal to or complements scientific knowledge. The second questions scientific development of knowledge (which generally pays little attention to the complexity of social experience) and seeks to develop social practices from the perspective of practice settings and the experiences of those involved.
