Since the beginning of the federation of Switzerland, the military chaplains have been leading military bands. In the beginning, they worked on a freewill basis, and later they were incorporated into the regular regiment. Since 1946, the number of military chaplains has increased greatly; in 1964 there were 731. The position of the chaplain lies at the intersection of two institutions: the church and the army. It is indeed a special and preferred situation of the relationship between church and state. But is, at the same time, the cause of a deep malaise for the chaplains. With an analysis of a few texts of national authorities regarding this theme of military chaplains and the church, this study will show that this malaise demonstrates the question of authority: to which authority are the field preachers subordinate? Is the evangelism the first line that they follow, or the state as the initiator of a national Christianity? If the church preserves its neutral position, does it lose its critical function inside the state, and this under the pretext of providing a contribution for the guarantee of a social peace? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
