The article profiles noted playwright Eugene O'Neill. O'Neill was born on October 16, 1888, in a hotel situated, ironically, on Broadway and 43rd Street. His fate appears to have been destined by genetics: his father, James, was one of America's most popular actors for almost 40 years, with a career that spanned from the 1880s until World War I. His breakthrough on Broadway occurred with the play Beyond the Horizon in 1920, and his career skyrocketed. That career peaked when he received the Nobel Prize in 1936, a first for an American playwright. He was, in a word, a genius, and quite possibly the greatest American playwright and dramatist in history.
